An easy way to understand the different grind types and sizes of Kava is to compare it to coffee. Learn why grind size & type matters and what you should be using to make better kava at home.
Medium Grind Kava - The most common Kava root powder found on the market. Very similar in particle size to medium fine ground coffee. Medium grind kava that has been pounded (traditionally ground) will have more inconsistencies in size like you would find when making medium fine grind coffee with a blade grinder. Medium grind Kava processed with a hammer mill will be more consistent in particle size like you would find with coffee ground with a burr grinder.
Micronized Kava - Similar to a fine espresso grind coffee. Micronized Kava increase the root surface area for faster brewing. You don’t have to worry about over extraction with micronized kava like you do with finely ground espresso coffee beans. However micronized kava increases the chances of experiencing nausea if too much root matter gets through your strainer. Make sure to use a kava strainer bag with a micron rating of 75-100 or an AluBall Kava Maker when making kava with micronized kava root.
Instant Kava - Just like instant coffee. Instant Kava is a kava powder that has been derived from brewed fresh kava root and enables users to quickly have a shell by simply adding water or juice to it. Instant kava is commercially prepared by either freeze-drying or spray drying. Instant kava is the fastest way to enjoy a shell of kava but you lose a lot of the essential plant oils of freshly brewed kava through the instant drying process.
